This Is Me #6

#1. I keep my Nalgene with me everywhere I go.  I despise disposable plastic water bottles.  Just the thought of them makes me want to explode.   The movie Tapped explains all my reasons perfectly.

#2.  At 27 I still ask my mom to french braid my hair for me.

#3.  Kimya Dawson's Alphabutt album makes me smile every time I sing along with it.  The album is clearly written for children, but I love it.

#4.  Battle Royale is one of my favorite movies.  Ever.

#5.  I'm addicted to reality TV.  I'll watch just about any show from Toddlers in Tiaras to American Pickers.

I'm busy busy busy working on my house.  Other than that not much going on here.  I haven't taken many photos of my progress, but I'll be sure to bring over my camera tomorrow.  Hope you're having a great day, and happy DIYing, chris!

Fun Friday Fascinations #13

#1. Concrete stamped to look like hardwood flooring!  Genius.  Found on The Lil' House That Could.

#2.  I love all the colors and patterns in this photo.  I want a funky chandelier in my bedroom!  Adds so much class to sleepy time.  Found on Better Homes & Gardens.

#3.  Looking for some painting inspiration, and I found this awesome photo.  Love everything about this colorful little nook.  Found on Sweet Peach.

#4.  More interior design inspiration, and a room that's perfect in every way.  Found on Modern Home Today.

#5.  We have a bunch of zucchini some friends grew, and I found this awesome recipe for Sauteed Zucchini on My Recipes.  You'll probably be seeing more zucchini here on Monday.  :)

Hope ya'll had a great week!  Happy friday, and happy DIYing, chris.

Plum, Kiwi, Pineapple Cocktail

Happy Thirsty Thursday.  I got so wrapped up in work, and then my house I almost forgot about today's post.  So after dinner I had to run out to get some supplies to make a drink with.  I didn't have ANYTHING in the house I could use.  I knew I wanted to use fresh fruit, and this is what I came up with.

Ingredients:
- half a plum
- half a kiwi
- two or three chunks of pineapple
- white rum
- 7up
- simple syrup

Directions:
Chop the fruit up into small pieces.  Pour a shot of rum, and half a shot of simple syrup into a glass.  Drop all the fruit in, and mash into the bottom of the glass.  Put a few ice cubes in, and then pour in the 7up.  Mix, and now you have a tasty refreshing summery drink.

This drink is the perfect mixture of fruit and alcohol.  It tastes like a tropical island,  but not in an overly sugary way.

I'm so glad I randomly grabbed this yummy fruit.  Just the kind of cocktail I like to end my week with.  Happy Thursday, and happy DIYing, chris!

Garden Pickin's

I'm exhausted!  Aaron and I woke up early, and got some stuff at Lowe's before he had to go to jury duty.  Then I headed over to our house, and started working on scraping the floors.  My hands are so sore, and there is only a three foot by four foot section done.  I got another section scrapped, but we still need to go over it, and get the super icky sticky bits that don't come up with the large scrapper.  While I was scrapping I would occasionally take a break and scrub the kitchen.  Every inch of the house is covered in nasty grime.  I made up a solution of washing soda, bleach and warm water to cut through the ick.  It worked really well, but some spots, like around the stove needed something more powerful.  I sprayed those areas down with goof off, and let it soak for a bit before rubbing the dirt away.  It's looking better, but I still need to do a TON of scrubbing.  I don't have any photos to show of the house today though.

Instead I have some photos of my first tomato harvest.  The first heirloom tomatoes that were ripe were our riesentraube tomatoes.  It's historically a German  heirloom that was commonly found in Philadelphia during the mid-1800's.  It has massive yields of flavorful cherry tomatoes.

This is a black cherry tomato with a blue jay feather I found on our deck.

This is the last bit of healthy lettuce I was able to pick.  I love all the varieties we tried out this year.  I want to figure out how to grow some lettuce through out the winter months.

I love the colors in this variety.  So pretty.

Hope you enjoyed, and happy DIYing, chris.

Exciting News!!!

I mentioned a few days ago that there has been a serious lack of DIYing on here, but it was due to a super special secret surprise.  Dunta - dunta - dahhh!!!

Aaron and I are homeowners!!!  Yay!  It's a cape cod style, with a living room, dining room, kitchen, full bathroom, and bedroom downstairs.  Upstairs there are two bedrooms, and another full bath.  There is a ton of work to do, but we are ultra excited.  Old and new homeowners like to remind us, there is always a lot of work with a home.  When I was a kid I didn't dream up what my wedding would be like one day.  I dreamt about what it would be like to work on my own home, and make it into something my neighbors and friends would be proud to know the owners of.  I couldn't be more elated to own a home with Aaron.

The first two things I wanted to get done pronto, was changing the locks, and removing this stinky, worn out, gross, outdated carpet.

It goes up the stairs, but it doesn't go into the bedrooms, or the bathroom.  Ick, so glad there isn't carpet in the bathroom.

Luckily it mostly resides in the living room.

I put on a pair of thick gloves, with a tough exterior to protect my hands.  Then I started pulling the rug up.  In the doorway between the dining room, and entry there was duct tape keeping the carpet down, so I started there.  A large middle band of decent hardwood appeared, and I was mega pleased.  I was expecting all the wood to be a wreck.  The padding is stuck to the floor in the front of the room, and back in the little nook by the bathroom/bedroom/basement area.  I think with some elbow grease, and a large scrapper we can get it off with little damage to the wood beneath it.

Next I got to work pulling up the seam of staples that ran the length of the room, and around the perimeter, plus a short four foot section.  I used the hammer and the catspaw to pull the staples up.  A lot of the staples were rusty, and would break, so I used the pliers to pull them out all the way.  I tried not to leave any pieces of staple in the flooring, but there are a couple places I couldn't get it out completely.  To ensure no one snags their bare feet on them, I gave the tiny bits of metal a good beating with the hammer.

I removed most of the wooden tack strips around the room, but Aaron helped with the last bit.  Which was awesome, cause then I was able to get a couple action shots.  He wasn't able to help today, because he had jury duty! Totally no fun! He always manages to get picked too.  Poor guy.

A wonder bar would have been a useful tool too, but I don't own one, and didn't think to buy one.   Ya work with what ya got.  :)  We hammered the catspaw in under the nails that secured the tack strip to the floor, and pried them up.  Working from one end to the other, until the strip was loose.

This is how we left the room for the day.  Tomorrow I will scrap up the remaining padding, and then see how they clean up with wood cleaner.  Plus I still need to remove the carpet from the stairs, and upstairs landing.  I'm excited to see how this place cleans up.  Maybe I'll take her out on a cheap date, if she looks real nice.  :)

Like I said, I'm thrilled to be working on this home with Aaron.  Right now I couldn't think of a better adventure to go on with him!  Hope you're having a super special Tuesday too, and happy DIYing, chris.

Swiss Chard & Yellow Squash

Happy Nom Nom Monday ya'll!!! I have a super simple recipe for today.  We have a bunch of swiss chard I didn't harvest in time.  Since I let it go for too long the lush leaves were chewed to death by bugs, and I could only use the stalks to cook with.  The stalks have the same texture as celery, but it tastes salty.

I sauteed some garlic in olive oil with a bit of crushed red pepper.  Then I added in the chard stalks and some chopped up yellow squash.  I covered the pan, and let sit for about five minutes, stirring occasionally.  When everything was nice and soft I dished up, and topped with a bit of shredded cheese.  Cheese makes everything yummy.

This was good.  Definitely not a main course, but it will be a great side veggie.  Oh! It would be perfect with grilled chicken and dijon mustard sauce.

Happy DIYing, chris

Calendar Talk

I know it's July 8th, and I shouldn't have anymore June things to post about, BUT here is my handmade calendar from June, and my July calendar.

I really like June's calendar.  I think that might have played a big role in my procrastinating.  I want June to stick around a little longer, please.

We managed to jam a whole lot into this month.  We started it off in Bennington, Vermont watching Peter Dinklage talk, and checking out local tourist attractions.  Then right into my niece's baptism.  Next, the week of birthdays, beginning with my cousin's, then my uncle's, finishing off with my Grandmom's birthday, she turned 82!!!  Aaron & I went to our first rodeo in Cowtown, NJ.  We traveled up to the Adirondack's, and celebrated our friends' bridal shower.  Sadly, only to return to a beyond sick pup, and we had to say goodbye to Moose.  The month ended with our six year anniversary of being a couple, but we didn't do anything.

July is supposed to look like a cocoon.  Ya know?  Like the very hungry caterpillar from June ate just the right amount, and is now hiding out while it transforms.  July is a good time for reflection, shedding old ways, and finding new beginnings.

Today we went to an ice cream festival.  It was crazy hot outside, so we didn't stay long, but we did listen to some live music, and eat some creamy vanilla ice creams.  Plus, we got to try some pasta from this new restaurant we've been wanting to try out.  All the vendors were local creameries, eateries, crafts people, and brewers.  I wish I had a bottomless pit for a stomach, so I could have tried more than one ice cream!

Tomorrow is my sister-in-law's birthday, and Friday is my cousin's birthday!  Then on the 21st we'll be celebrating my brother's engagement.  I can tell this month is going to get just as busy as June.

Well I hope ya'll are staying out of the heat, and happy DIYing, chris.
