This Is Me #8

1. I'm a perfectionist with control issues.  I'm terrible at delegating.

2.  I'm 5"5', but I think shorter is cuter.

3.  I don't know what I want to be when I grow up.

4.  I love cheese.  Put cheese on just about anything, and I'll eat it.

5.  I almost always have at least one cactus in my house.  I'm not sure at what age I asked my mom to buy me one, but I know I've had a long time fascination with them.  I have a hard time going to a garden center, and going home without a new cacti or succulent.

Hope ya'll are having a great saturday, and happy DIYing, chris.

Fun Friday Fascinations #15

#1. This skirt from ModCloth couldn't be more perfect.  I've been on the hunt for a good skirt.  The colors will be great for fall!

#2.  I'm fairly certain this pair of sneakers were made with me in mind.  My name is written all over them.  Found them on Journey's, they are made by Pastry.

#3.  My aunt makes totes, and lately I've been on the hunt for some inspirational tutorials.  I love the birds on this guy, made by See Kate Sew.  I wonder if my aunt would dig this?

#4.  I love the table setting is this photo, and the key is definitely those lovely plate chargers.  This is a great tutorial from the Paper Muse Press, and even if your not impressed by her lovely geometric plywood chargers, definitely check our her inspiring, pretty, little blog.

#5.  Another inspiring DIY -- Jim Lambie's duct tape floor installations found on Inthralld.  I hope they put a thick coat of polyurethane on there, so it will last a long time.

#6.  I want to go see this light installation by Bruce Munro at Longwood Gardens.  I've been to Longwood Gardens' a ton, but I've only visited at night for their Christmas event.  This looks truly spectacular.  Light show art installations through out the gardens, and fire works to end the night!  Sign me up!

Happy you all enjoyed, and happy DIYing, chris!

Kiwi Nectarine Cocktail

Happy Thirsty Thursday!  Today I have another white rum cocktail.  I have a habit of wanting to use up whatever I have before I buy new stuff.  I've wanted to branch out of just making white rum cocktails, but that's what I have, so that's what I'm using.  I'm not really one to have a stocked bar.  Maybe now that we are homeowners, we might change that.  :)  Anyway, today I made a Kiwi and Nectarine Cocktail.

Ingredients:
- half a kiwi
- half a nectarine
- a shot of white rum
- a half shot of simple syrup
- 7Up

Directions:
Cut the fruit up.  Pour the white rum and simple syrup into the glass.  Then smash the fruit into the bottom of the cup.  Add ice, and fill up with 7up.  Stir, and drink!

Yum!  Like Aaron said you can barely taste the rum, but yet it's not super sugary either.  Another perfect summer cocktail.  Fruit and white rum always equal a win in my book!  Now I need to go relax, and enjoy my cocktail! :)  Happy DIYing, chris.

Taking the Day Off

I've been working my butt off at my house everyday.  I wake up around seven.  Drink my coffee, and do some house research on products, tips, and home improvement tutorials.  Then I get ready to go over to my house, and work there until dinner time.  It's a full time job, and I haven't taken a day off since we bought it on the ninth.  Aaron really encouraged me to take today off.  I was definitely resistant, and it took some work on Aaron's part, but I decided he had a good idea.

Of course I couldn't fully take the day off, so we spent the morning getting new windows for our bedroom.  By the time we were done with that whole ordeal, we were starving for lunch.  I love tomato and cheese sandwiches in the summer, and they are even better with tomatoes I grew.  This is a Pink Ponderosa, as you can tell it is super juicy.  It's a little sweeter than your typical red tomato, but so flavorful.

Then I spent the rest of the afternoon sitting on the couch, catching up on season 2 of Rookie Blue, and treated myself to a Cadbury ice cream popsicle.  I'm waiting for disc four from Netflix, and I hope they didn't kill off Swarek!  And just as him and McNally were finally getting together!  I love me some cop drama.  Though when Aaron left for work at four I started feeling ultra lazy, and decided to get some laundry done.  I also did some vacuuming and cleaning the bathroom.  Since getting our house I've been seriously letting my chores fall behind.  Now I'm catching up on my reality TV shows.  Hope ya'll are having a relaxing Wednesday, and happy DIYing, chris!

Prime Cooking

Lots of long hours of painting.  Right now I'm focusing on getting the kitchen done.  Not one room in our house is ready to be moved into yet, but I'm trying to change that.

I started off by scrubbing the kitchen down.  I used a water and bleach mixture to begin.  Oh yeah, and there was some washing soda (not photographed) in there to.  For the tough spots I used Goof Off to cut through the heavy grease that clung to the walls around the stove.  I think I'm in love with this Cabinet & Wood cleaner, it smells like amaretto.  The Goo Gone was for paint spills or super sticky spots.  I also removed any outlet and light switch covers, vents, and the ceiling light fixtures.

After the cleaning I taped any areas I didn't want paint on.  I also covered some of the cabinets with plastic.  Normally I would prefer to remove the kitchen cabinets before painting, but this paint job is just a temp fix until I can take the ceiling tiles and wood paneling down.  I taped around the whole perimeter of the room, leaving no gaps between the baseboards and the floor.  Even in the small closet.

Once everything was covered I started with primer.  I used Kilz2, and a large pan for my roller, and a smaller tray for my edging brushes.

I like to have a variety of sizes for painting the corners, and all the grooves in the paneling.  Cutting in from the edges with the paint brushes makes rolling a lot less messy.  I used the larger roller for the ceiling and large expanses of wall space.  The small roller for over the doors, and over the cabinets.

This is an example of one coat on the left, and two coats rolled out on the right.  The right side still needs a second coat with the brushes in the corners and along the edges.  My biggest tip for getting nice even coats of paint is to avoid splatter marks or drips.  If they do happen, roll over them or brush over them with a brush that has little to no paint on it.    When rolling if you are creating lines use less pressure, and make sure you're applying even pressure over the whole roller.  If it looks uneven and patchy when wet, it will still be uneven and patchy when dry.

Here is another example of two coats on the left, and one coat on the right.  As long as your first coat is smooth it will be easy to fill in with the second coat.  If you do have drips be sure to sand them, and clean the surface before painting another coat.

Today I finished two coats of primer on the ceiling, and all the walls except for in the closet, and around the cabinets.  So far I've spent three days priming this kitchen, and two days cleaning it!  I'm looking into buying a airless paint sprayer for the rest of the house. Painting is way too time consuming.

Hope ya'll are having a good day, and happy DIYing, chris!

Thyme for Breadcrumbs

Today's recipe for Nom Nom Monday is super easy.  I had a long day at the house, and I wasn't that enthusiastic about making something.  So I'm using some pics from a few days ago when I made some breadcrumbs.

I've been saving the ends of bread for months.  I save them by tearing the bread up into small bits like above, and then I store them in a plastic bread bag in the freezer.  I love potato bread, so that's what I used, but this would work with any bread.

I preheated the oven to 350ºF, and covered a cookie sheet with foil.  Then I sprayed the tray down with oil, and sprayed the bread bits with oil.  I seasoned them with seasoned salt, and popped them in the oven for twelve minutes or so.  When they were toasty brown I pulled them out.

Next I threw them in a blender, and mixed in some dried thyme.  I used about a tablespoon per cup of bread.

This is what it looked like when done.  I had 8 cups of bread, and that resulted in about 4 cups of breadcrumbs.  It's always useful to have breadcrumbs on hand.  There are so many yummy dishes I can make with them.  Last night my mom used them to make zucchini fries.  They were tasty, a great  healthy alternative to french fries.

Well, I'm tired and it's not even eight!  'Night!  Happy DIYing, chris

Cute Hot Summer Outfit

Since I haven't been getting dressed up lately I haven't been making an outfit posts.  When I got dressed up yesterday (for my brother's engagement dinner) I knew I had to have Aaron snap some photos.  I wore this outfit in the spring on a rainy day, but I restyled it for the hot summer days we've been having.
dress -- H & M
slip -- thrifted vintage
belt -- Target
necklace -- my cousin made the pendant, and the chain was a gift
bracelet -- inherited from my step-grandmother
sandals -- DSW Mix No. 9

My cousin made the glass pendant for this necklace, and I always get at least one compliment when I wear it.  The gold chain is an antique from my mother-in-law.  She gave me the diamond for my engagement ring on it, and when I got the ring the jeweler was really impressed with the chain.  Apparently they don't make this type of chain anymore, because it's super delicate.  He cleaned it for me, and gave me a large silk lined padded box to keep it in.

I almost feel off the rock when I was stepping onto it, and Aaron was sure to snap an action shot.  :)

This is the only pair of sandals I own, and they are perfectly summery.

I'm not really sure what I'm looking at or doing in this photo, but it makes me think of Alice in Wonderland.  Maybe I'm about to fall down a rabbit hole.

I love all the colors in this dress' intricate pattern.  The blue lace and silk slip is the perfect addition to lengthen this short dress, and make it family appropriate, while still keeping it dainty and feminine.  Oh, and don't worry that weird stuff on my knuckles is just paint.  No, I don't have some gross skin disease, but I do have super veiny hands and wrists.

And before I go here's an outtake.  Goodnight, and Happy DIYing, chris!
