Ultimate Weekend Casual

This is my ultimate casual weekend outfit.  I love this pair of jeans.  I found them on a trip to NYC to visit my friend Mamie.  I grabbed them up from the sale rack at Urban Outfitter's Times Square location.  They only cost $14, and they fit like a glove.  I always have a hard time with pants being too long, but with these being fitted at the ankle it looks cool with all the extra material.  They are Levi's, which is a jean brand you can't go wrong with.  I've had them for about two years, and they are still in great condition, especially considering some weeks I might wear them three or four times.  I like pairing them with a colorful top or a top with an eye catching print.  Today I went for both with my dip-dyed pink tank top and this lovely bird print  blouse from H & M.

Tank Top -- Target, bleach dip-dyed
Sneakers -- Converse

Well I'm off to my friends house to have a little weekend fun.  Have a great saturday, and happy DIYing, chris!

Lemon Watermelon Tequila

Happy Thirsty Thursday!  Today I have a recipe for a Lemon Watermelon Tequila.

Ingredients:
- a shot of tequila
- juice of half a lemon & a slice for garnish
- watermelon soda

Directions:
Pour the tequila into the glass.  Squeeze the lemon juice into the tequila.  Drop some ice cubes into the glass, and fill with watermelon soda.  Garnish with a lemon wedge or two.

Stir and enjoy.  Simple drink, that doesn't overwhelm the tequila flavor, but is a nice spin off of the classic lemon and club soda with tequila cocktail.

Have a lovely night, and happy DIYing, chris!

Positivity

I lack confidence.  It's something I've struggled with my whole life, and will continue to struggle with on a daily basis.  When someone pays me a compliment I usually take it with a (large) grain of salt, and make excuses for why it doesn't count.  For example I recently changed my facebook  profile photo, and a few of my friends made some really sweet compliments telling me I look great.  My initial reaction was, ' awe that's so sweet, but they probably mean I have a cute outfit on, cause I just look like me.'.  My lack of confidence doesn't end there either.  I have a hard time believing I'm talented or smart.  Usually when someone says they're impressed by something I've made I chalk it up to a lack of experience on their part.  Not that I'm all that good, just that they don't have much to compare it to.  This is a terrible habit to be in.  It's a part of me I'd truly like to change.

I know it's something that will take a lot of work, and wont change overnight, but having more confidence is something I think a lot of people (especially women) could benefit from.  As a school photographer there isn't a day that goes by that a women doesn't say to me "I hate my picture being taken".  Or once I snap the photo, and show it to them, "that's me, and it wont get any better".  Even the beautiful women say, "ugh, I look horrible" on a regular basis.  Belittling ourselves knows no bounds.  Most of the time I blame the media.  How can average everyday women not see flaws glaring back at them from the mirror, when they are surrounded by images of women 'aging gracefully' with plenty of plastic surgery and botox?  We can't all be super models, and we shouldn't all want to be!  There is nothing wrong with wrinkles, gray hair, and even a little flab wont kill you.  Nor will my pimples.

I want to take a stand for women of all shapes and sizes, and degrees of intelligence.  We are all beautiful and talented in our own unique way.  It doesn't matter if you are a size zero or fourteen.  If you like to read Nietzsche, or if you would rather work on your tan.  Or if you like to do both!  We are all unique snowflakes (hey Fight Club fans), and we don't have to neatly fit into a predetermined box defined by someone other than yourself.  It's time to find something that makes you feel good about you.  For me that's yoga.  I might not be the best, but whenever I do yoga I feel a bit stronger and more centered, and thus more confident.

Confident that next time I'll be able to hold that pose for longer.

Confident that I'll be able to stretch deeper into my position.

Confident that I'm a strong and powerful woman, and I can accomplish anything I set my mind to.

I know yoga wont have the same affect on everyone, but I urge you to open your mind and soul to search for that something that will.  It's important to fill our lives with positivity, and only good can come out of doing things that make you feel good about yourself.  Good luck searching, and if you've already found it, I'd love to hear about your positive activities!  What things do you do to feel better about yourself?

Happy DIYing, chris!

Packing up the Craft Supplies

No DIY today because I am packing up my craft gear.  We are getting closer to our move date.  Not that we have a firm date, but at this point it's useful to take over a few boxes any time we go over to our house.  Don't tell anyone, but I love packing.  I find it cathartic to go through my belongings, and organize them into groups for boxing up.  Throwing away broken or useless things, and donating items that have gone unused for long periods of time.  It's a feat to figure out how to get as much use out of all the space in the boxes with lots of oddly shaped stuff.  Whenever I pack up my crafts I always have a handful of super random odds and ends.

I always seem to find colorful rocks and man made stones and marbles amongst my things.  I certainly didn't have any DIYs planned with these, but I was happy to see them.  The little gold nugget I've had since I was a really little.  As a kid I thought it was genuine gold.

I don't play guitar, but for some reason I have two picks, and those little origami swans my uncle made years and years ago.

I've been collecting nuts and washers.  I want to make some jewelry with them.

Keys always beg me to save them.   I'm surprised I don't have piles of them.

A lot of times when I make paper items I make a few more than I need.

Do you remember The Raisinettes?  I found this guy hanging out near my craft stuff.  For no particularly good reason.

Now everything is safely stowed away.  After I took this photo I managed to fit a few more things in there, and closed it up.

That's what I've been up to!  Happy DIYing, chris

The Real Con Queso

Happy Nom Nom Monday!  I'm not a big sports fan, but I know a lot of people are, and today's recipe is the perfect Game Night snack.  I love cheese dip, but whenever I buy a jar of con queso I feel my arteries clogging.  So I hunted the internet for a homemade version.  Not that cheese dip can magically become healthy, but I can at least know exactly what is entering my body, and have control over the amount of sodium in the mix.  Searching the internet for homemade con queso turns up a lot of recipes where you simply mix velveta and rotel tomatoes.  Not exactly the kind of recipe I was looking for, but after some digging I stubbled upon the Homesick Texan's blog, and her recipe for A More Natural Con Queso.

Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons of salted butter
- 1/2 cup of onion
- 1/2 cup of jalapeno peppers
- 4 cloves of garlic
- 2 tablespoons of flour
- 1 cup of milk
- 1/2 cup of cilantro
- 2 plum tomatoes
- 6 cups of shredded cheese (any mixture will do)
- 1/2 cup sour cream

Directions:
I started off by preparing all my ingredients.  I diced the onion, peppers, and tomatoes.  I minced the garlic, and chopped up the cilantro.  I also measured out the butter, flour, milk, and shredded cheese.  For the shredded cheese I used straight cheddar, and a four cheese mexican blend.

Then I  melted the butter in a large saucepan over medium to low heat.  Once the butter was melted I sautéed the onion and jalapeno peppers for about five minutes.  Then I added the garlic, and after about a minute I added the flour.  Then I whisked in the milk, creating a thick rue.  Next I mixed in the tomatoes and cilantro.

Now for the cheeses.  I added them a 1/4 cup at a time, making sure the cheese melted before I added the next scoop.  When I had melted all six cups of cheese into the mixture I measured out and dropped in the sour cream.  The sour cream is the final touch, making the whole mixture come together.

This is super tasty, and not ultra spicy either.  I think next time I want to use some stronger cheeses, and more jalapeno peppers for a stronger kick though.  This recipe makes a lot, so it's perfect for a get-together, but if you're not entertaining I would suggest cutting the recipe in half.

Have a great night, and happy DIYing, chris!

DIY Facial Mask

I've been in a constant battle with my facial skin since I hit puberty.  It doesn't seem to matter what I do, I incessantly have acne.  I can't remember a time when I wasn't self conscious about my face.  When someone says I look younger than I am, which I get a lot, I usually think it's because all my pimples make them believe I must be in my late teens.  To say the least I'm always on a hunt for new cleaners, which can get pricey.  I've been noticing a lot of au naturale recipes for facial masks, that use basic kitchen ingredients.  I was hesitant to give it a try for fear of bringing on a breakout.  But seriously how much damage could stuff I eat do?

I cruised the internet for some recipes, and I found a lot of ideas.  I decided I wanted to use these three ingredients.  A few drops of lemon juice, a teaspoon of sugar, and three aspirin.  The aspirin needs to be uncoated, ya know the white chalky kind.

I ground up the aspirin with the bottom of my glass bowl.  I scraped the aspirin dust into the bowl, and spooned the sugar in, then dribbled a little lemon juice on top.  Mixed together into a paste, and spread on my face.

I let it sit for a couple minutes, and then washed off with warm water.  While it was on it felt a bit tingly, which makes me think it must have been working.  I also happened to get a taste of it off my lips, and it's yummy too!  While washing off the mask the sugar felt nice exfoliating my skin.  I shall see how my skin looks in the morning.  I hope this helps my skin, it will certainly be cheaper than Proactive.

Have a great night, and happy DIYing, chris!
